Coffee Philosophy (Aka Are you A Carrot, Egg, or Coffee) is flawed [Rambling]
You might’ve heard of something like this before
“Eggs, which are fragile and weak, when boiled, become hard and sturdy. Carrots, which are hard and strong, if boiled become soft and weak. And coffee, which is hard, when boiled, doesn’t change its properties, if anything, it changed the properties of the water it boiled with. So be like coffee”.
And since the first time I’ve been introduced with this so called “Coffee philosophy”, It always bothers me. Like… why changing from soft to hard or hard to soft is a bad thing? Who decides that? It can also be a good thing. If anything, I can only see the properties of coffee which behave like that as a disaster.
I’ll give examples of what I meant with Dragon Ball character development as an illustrative example (since I am a Dragon Ball fan and analyze its story structure multiple times because I have nothing better to do).
For the eggs example, I’ll use Gohan
Early on he was introduced as someone that is a crybaby and meek (aka like “Eggs”).
However, after forced to face adversity(boiled),
Becomes one of the strongest earth’s fighters.
We now move to the carrots. For the carrots example, I’ll use Piccolo.
He is introduced as someone ruthless and evil (aka “Hard”)
However, due to his interaction with Gohan (boiled)
He becomes a caring… person(?) (Aka “soft”)
And now we move to the coffee example.
Hard, and even when boiled, doesn’t change its properties, but change the water properties instead. This is what I meant by I can only ever see it as a disaster, because they don’t particularly change at all throughout their arc. If anything, they are the ones that made the plot moves forward due to their evil actions.
I hope this illustrates how flawed this “philosophy” to you. Thanks for whoever reading this to the end
