Bad day to pick up a keyboard and write for online publication that is. Or actually, even offline publication too isn’t that different either.
Saturation in creative works has always been a problem. But today, it became even more real. Though the reason is because we got more fakes flooding the entire field. After all, not only we have to compete against real writers, real artists and real actors. We also need to go against fake writers, fake artists and fake actors too.
Not to mention, we are at the age of algorithmic recommendation and nickel and dime stage of capitalism. So if whatever you are making doesn’t fit what’s trending, it would be buried 10 m under everything else. Making it as though it has never even existed in the first place.
If you put your stories or comics on a big platform. Let’s say like…tapas, webtoon, or mangatoon, or webnovel or something even wattpad. There’s a big chance that it wouldn’t even be visible for the majority of the audience. After all, many would straight up push you down for the sake of promoting their own stuff.
As in their contracted stuff. If you are indie on these platforms. Getting an audience is kinda a tall order nowadays. More so, once again. When you don’t write or draw what others publish.
Getting views used to be easy. Just make a good story and update it often. When you update your stories or comics or whatever would be shown in the front page and be visible to anyone. But today, it’s not that simple anymore. Instead of being shown something new, the service would guess what they think would like and recommend it.
Of course there are some places that still adhere to an old simple method like fictionpress or royalroad. But those kinds of places have become rare because, well. Everyone is chasing after money. So, even though we have far more people connected to the internet. For some of us, it has become even quieter. It is so quiet you might feel you are publishing to a void.
For some, just being able to write alone is a joyous occasion worth celebrating. Some of my friends pretty much just write for their own enjoyment. And that works for them.
But as a social species, I crave for recognition. And I would like for other people to see, read, and have thoughts about what I created. But maaan. Dead internet is too real. I wonder when we can finally end this zombie internet era.
